Polyolefins with a broad mol. wt. distribution are continuously manufd. by polymg. or copolymg. olefins in the presence of a solvent, H and Ziegler catalyst consisting of a supported transition metal compd. and an organometallic compound in 2 stages. In the first stage, conditions are maintained so that little or no gas phase is present in the reactor. The second stage of polymn. is carried out in the presence of H under conditions such that a H-olefin gas phase is present, and a lower mol. wt. polymer forms in this step. The final product is recovered from the reaction mixt.
