The absorber rod (1) of a nuclear reactor is arranged suspended in a guided tube (2), arranged essentially vertically, and hangs on coupling claws (6a, b). The rod is provided with a grabhead (3) which is mounted in an articulated fashion, e.g. by means of a universal joint (5). The bearing surfaces of the coupling claws and those of an undercut (4) of the grabhead are designed to be inclined to the horizontal. In the operating state, the coupling claws are held in their position by stops (9) which in the event of shutdown are raised by lifting magnets (8) and release the coupling claws. Should one of these mechanisms fail and one of the coupling claws (6a) remain engaged with the grabhead, the latter slides off on the bevelled (tapered) surfaces accompanied by simultaneous deflection from the longitudinal axis which is permitted by the articulation. <IMAGE>
