The present invention relates to a catalytic process for the direct hydrogenation of the esters of carboxylic acids to give alcohols. The reaction is carried out in liquid or gaseous phase in the presence of a carrier catalyst which contains rhenium and at least one noble metal from the group VIII. The process can be carried out at a moderate reaction pressure and reaction temperature, the temperature being 150 to 300 DEG C and the pressure 10 to 100 atmospheres. In particular, the invention relates to the preparation of alcohols having 2 to 20 carbon atoms.
