The luffing crane is constructed according to the double-link principle and has a compression link (2), a tension link (3) and a head jib (4) linked to their ends. To improve the stability of its four-bar mechanism (1-4), an additional jib (10) is attached to the front end of the head jib (4). The end of the jib (10) opposite the load is connected to one of the links (2, 3), preferably the compression link (2), by a link bar (11). In the position of maximum working radius of the head jib (4), its reach is extended by the additional jib (10). In the position of minimum working radius, the additional jib (10) is swung back so that the slewing angle of the head jib (4) need not be so large. The head jib (4) cannot therefore move into a position in one line with the compression link (2), which position would be unstable.
