A description is given of a die-casting machine in which a casting chamber of variable volume is formed between the press plunger and a counter plunger lying opposite in the cylinder. Before triggering the shot, the volume of this casting chamber is reduced by appropriately controlling the movement of the two plungers such that the air which is initially still present after filling the casting chamber with liquid casting material is virtually completely displaced, i.e. a degree of filling of approximately 100% is obtained. This ideal degree of filling of the casting chamber contributes considerably to the structural quality of the shaped part obtained; in particular, the porosity and the air pockets are considerably reduced. <IMAGE>
