The apparatus includes a plurality of D.C. motors with armatures and fields connected as shown in a bridge configuration, a power mode switch TP and diode DP, together with a chopper C, being operative during a power mode, and a braking mode switch TB and diode DB, together with the chopper, being operative in a braking mode. This arrangement provides the desired balancing of motor currents in both the power and braking modes and the desired cross coupling of motor currents in the braking mode to prevent an overload condition for operation of any motor. Both switches TP and TB may be made conducting simultaneously after a coast operation to energize the fields F3 and F4 in preparation for a braking mode.
