A flexible cigar arresting belt (58) is arranged in a shaft, in the manner of a trough, and is fixed by one end to an advancing device which is controlled by a cigar feed device (14). The belt trough becomes deeper in accordance with the increasing filling of cigars, the topmost cigar layer in each case remaining at an approximately constant level. The cigars have only a short distance to drop and are collected tidily. The cigar bundle can easily be removed from the belt trough by means of a plastic strip (76). <IMAGE>
