In a process for removing undesirable gaseous constituents from an exhaust gas, containing sulphur dioxide or other impurities, from combustion, the exhaust gas is cooled and scrubbed by an absorbent selective for sulphur dioxide. To remove nitrogen oxides which are contained in the exhaust gas, ammonia is added to the exhaust gas before scrubbing and the resulting gas mixture is passed over a catalyst. The nitrogen oxides are reduced in the course of this. The catalyst packing is expediently situated at the hot end of a regenerator for cooling the exhaust gas and is arranged on the regenerator charge.
