The invention relates to a process for treating effluents containing sulphuric acid, in which process the effluent is mixed with an alkali metal sulphate such as a sodium compound under conditions for the formation of the corresponding alkali metal bisulphate, the bisulphate is dried or crystallized and then reacted with an alkali metal halide such as chloride to form the corresponding hydrogen halide.
