DETECTION OF METAL-IN AND METAL-OFF OF MATERIAL TO BE ROLLED IN BROADSIDE ROLLING DEVICE

PURPOSE:To make the detection of the optimum timings for the metal-in and metal-off of a material to be rolled into and from vertical rolls by detecting said timings from the output of detectors for the material to be rolled disposed on the passage side of the material to be rolled through the vertical rolls. CONSTITUTION:In an edger having vertical rolls 12 and vertical roll chocks 14, in the state before a material 10 to be rolled approaches to the edger, the chocks 14 are held retreated, and detectors 42 for the material to be rolled are also held retreated to the retreat positions. When the material 10 approaches to the edger and the edger assmues the state to be ready for starting of rolling, the chocks 14 advance, and along with this, the detectors 42 fixed to a supporting base 40 advance as well to the measuring positions corresponding to the width of the material 10, and all the detectors 42 are now ready to start measuring. When the leadng end of the material 10 arrives below the detectors 42 upon starting of rolling, the output states of the detectors 42 change and therefore the metal-in and metal-off are detected surely.
