<p>A centrifuge apparatus and a method of using the apparatus to make hollow glass microspheres and hollow glass vacuum microspheres. The centrifuge has a rotor with a plurality of coaxial blowing nozzles disposed in the outer peripheral wall of the rotor. Molten glass is supplied to the centrifuge and by centrifugal force is caused to coat the inner wall surface of the rotor and be fed to the coaxial nozzles. A blowing gas or metal vapor blowing gas is supplied to the centrifuge and fed to the coaxial blowing nozzles. An entraining fluid is also supplied to the centrifuge which flows through the centrifuge and is directed at the coaxial blowing nozzles. The hollow glass vacuum microspheres are made by forming a liquid film of molten glass across the coaxial blowing nozzles, applying a metal vapor blowing gas at a positive pressure on the inner surface of the glass film to blow the film which combines with the centrifugal force to form an elongated cylinder shaped liquid film of molten glass which is detached by a jet to form a hollow sphere. During formation of the microsphere, it is subjected to an external pulsating or fluctuating pressure having periodic oscillations, to assist in formation of the microspheres and their detachment from the blowing nozzle orifices. The inventive apparatus and method enable the production of microspheres having uniform size and more controlled and predictable physical and chemical characteristics than has been possible by previous methods.</p> |
