The piston which comprises a piston head having a crown surface, and a piston skirt extending downwardly from the piston head. A combustion bowl is formed in the piston head. The combustion bowl has a side wall and extends downwardly from the crown surface. A metal insert is provided in the piston head at the crown and defining an upper portion of the combustion bowl. The insert has an annular ring structure with a smooth outer wall and a flange which extends outwardly from a lower portion of the annular ring structure. The flange includes a row of scallop-shaped protrusions along an outer peripheral edge of it. The metal insert provides an undercut structure in the side wall.
