PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device of a type, used for a different load in common capable of automatically correcting its output to a rated level, even in the case that a discharge lamp having different rated power is mounted and of controlling light modulation so as to set an optical output rate nearly constant. SOLUTION: This device has a D.C. power source 6 having a variable output voltage, an inverter 7 connected to the output end of the D.C. power source 6, a discharge lamp La connected to the output end of the inverter 7 and a detection means 8 for detecting at least either of current I1a or the voltage V1a of the discharge lamp La. The V-I characteristic of the inverter 7 is so set as to pass an operation point of the discharge lamp having the first rated power or its vicinity, and an output voltage VDC of the D.C. power source 6 is lowered for the discharge lamp, having the second rated power of a smaller rated current than that of the V-I characteristics of the inverter 7, according to the value detected by the detection means 8. |
