NEW MATERIAL:A 4-halo-2-pentenoic acid amide derivative of formula III (X<1> is Cl, F or I; R<1> is H, alkyl, alkenyl, etc.; Y is halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, etc.; m and n are integers 0.1 or 2). EXAMPLE:4-Chloro-N-ethyl-N-(2-chlorobenzyl)-2-pentenoic acid amide. USE:A herbicide effective for weeds in paddy fields or plowed fields by the pre- or post-emergence soil treatment. PROCESS:A 4-halo-2-pentenoyl halide of formulaIis reacted with an amine of formula II in a solvent, e.g. water, acetone or THF, in the presence of an acid binder, e.g. KOH or triethylamine, to give the aimed compound of formula III in high yield. The reaction is carried out at a temperature in the range of -20-+100 deg.C for 1-4hr. |
