Vapours, melts or pastes to be solidified are introduced into an agitated and cooled bed of already solidified, free-flowing product (4). The heat of solidification is removed at the large surface area of the product bed, which in turn rejects this heat to the cooled walls of the container (30), the stirrer (32) enhancing the heat transfer and preventing any formation of blocks during solidification. The container (30) is constructed as a lock container, in which the starting material is introduced from an apparatus (20) by means of a screw (21) while valve (23) is open. When the container is filled with solidified product (14), the valve (23) is closed and the container is brought to atmospheric pressure by means of valve (13), so that the product, after discharge valve (8) has been opened, can be drained down to the minimum level (4). Then the reverse procedure is followed to re-equalise the pressure in the lock container (30) to that in the apparatus (20), and the process starts again. <IMAGE>
