PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a resin componet in coating materials in high conversion, selectivity and yield, by adding a p-substituted phenol with formaldehyde, etc. under specific conditions, and condensing the addition product in the same reaction system. CONSTITUTION:One moleA p-substituted phenol is reacted with formaldehyde or a functional derivative thereof at a molar ratio between the phenol and the formaldehyde of 1:3 or more in the presence of 0.3mol or more, based on one mole phenol, alkali, preferably an alkali metallic hydroxide, at 50 deg.C or below, preferably 20-50 deg.C. The resultant 2,5-dihydroxymethyl-4-substituted phenol in the reaction mixture is condensed at 50 deg.C or above, preferably 60-100 deg.C, to give a binuclear compound of the formula (R is alkyl, alkoxyl, aryl or aralkyl). The reaction is preferably carried out in an aqueous medium. |
