The device has an outer enclosure retaining the gas, two switching contacts in the enclosure, and a cylindrical enclosure for the contacts. The cylinder is of a non magnetic conducting material, and a cylindrical permanent magnet is placed concentrically with and surrounding the non magnetic cylinder. When an arc is formed by the opening of the contacts, an extremity of the arc is displaced by the magnetic flux from the permanent magnet towards the interior of the conducting cylinder. The arc is set in rotation by inductive interaction with the magnetic field, and cooled by the cylinder walls. The fixed contact electrode is in the form of an inverted U and is situated in the upper section of the housing.
