During the vaccum filling of containers made of deformable material, especially of thermoplastic, those regions of the container which would be inadmissibly deformed as a result of the pressure difference without special precautions are stabilised by retaining devices (28) engaging on the container (10) on the outside. In many instances, it will suffice to use circular retaining devices which resemble suction cups and which, in the projection onto the surface to be stabilised, have a substantially smaller extension than the latter, so that a vaccum filling of containers of this type, also without inadmissible deformation of these, is possible under normal atmospheric pressure in the environment by simple means and at relatively low operating costs.
