Conventional injection systems for diesel engines give rise to BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) and emissions problems. The UFIS (Universal Fuel Injection System) system alleviates such problems by electronically controlling fuel injection in response to engine operating parameters, but is limited to the use of a single fuel and requires extensive "hardware" changes for various engine applications. The fuel injection system (10) of this invention provides an apparatus (11) capable of controlling the starting and stopping of the injection of two or more fuels (F, F') sequentially or simultaneously in response to the continuous rotation of one or more control rotors (23, 48). Adjustment apparatus (32, 32') is associated with the rotors (23, 48) to adjust the quantity and/or durations of the separate fuel injections and the timings thereof in relation to each other. Another rotor and separate adjustment apparatus can be used to control the duration and timing of the further injection of a fluidized chemical, such as ammonia, in engine applications wherein high concentrations of nitrogen oxides are prevalent. |
