In order, in a drum for drying or calcining and cooling bulk material, to save energy and to achieve as short a construction as possible, an inner drum is connected rigidly to an outer drum, the bulk material passing first through the inner and subsequently through the outer drum. Both the heating air and the cooling air are let in counter to the flow direction of the bulk material and in particular the hot air into the inner drum and the cooling air on the opposite side of the outer drum. For the cooling air, a transfer opening into the inner drum is then provided so that the cooling air heated by the bulk material during cooling additionally supports the drying process. The air mixed from hot air and cooling air is then carried off for dust removal.
