The invention provides a method for the drying of laundry which works on the evaporator principle. The laundry is heated to that temperature at which the water contained in the laundry changes from the liquid to the gaseous state (boiling point). By reducing the pressure, the evaporation can take place even at a temperature of below 100 DEG C. The steam can be pumped off and/or condensed by cooling. If the steam is pumped off and compressed, the heat generated during condensation can be recovered for the evaporation process.
