An oxygen stabilized intermetallic compound having the formula ZrxOVy where x=0.7 to 2.0 and y=0.18 to 0.33. The compound is capable of reversibly sorbing hydrogen at temperatures from -196 DEG C. to 450 DEG C. at pressures down to 10-6 Torr. The compound is also capable of selectively sorbing hydrogen from gaseous mixtures in the presence of CO and CO2.
