PURPOSE:To strengthen the connected part of metal-coated optical fibers by butting ends of the fibers to each other, heating the butted part of the metallic coating layers with introduced laser beams, and rotating the butted part to uniformly form thin melt-bonded surfaces. CONSTITUTION:Metal-coated optical fibers 1 are cut, and ends of the metallic coating layers 3 of Al or the like are butted to each other. Laser beams from a laser beam generating source 4 are separated into laser beams B1 and beams B2 with the reflecting faces 5b, 5a of a triangular prism, converged to beams B3, B4 with 4 reflecting mirrors 6, 8, 7, 9 and converging lenses 10, 11, and introduced into the butted part of the metallic coating layers 3a, 3b as shown by the arrows, and the metal-coated optical fiber 1a, 1b are rotated and melt-bonded to form thin melt-bonded surfaces 12a, 12b of Al or the like. Thus, the optical fibers can be connected with a small transmission loss and a fine external shape. |
