PURPOSE:To achieve tracking adjustment even for a tape device having an even number of tracks, by using a data track having uniformly magnetization inversion wider than two-track width and date for tracking adjustment written narrower than two-track width after the adjustment of the gain of two tracks. CONSTITUTION:In case of an odd number of tracks, tracking is adjusted with equal outputs from data tracks 7 and 8 recorded on both sides of a center track 6 with the same magnetization and shifted phase. On the other hand, in case of an even number (18 in an example shown in a figure) of tracks, the gain is adjusted so that the output of the two tracks is equal by using a data track with uniform magnetization inversion having sufficiently wider width than a width 9 of two trackings 4 and 5 used for tracking adjustment, and the tracking adjustment is made by using data 3 of tracking adjustment written narrower than the two-track widths 9. |
