A composition for treating or preventing liver disease comprising cryptotanshinone is provided to protect hepatocyte, and to induce apoptosis of hepatic stellate cell(HSC) causing liver fibrosis and liver cirrhosis. The composition for treating or preventing liver disease comprises cryptotanshinone represented by the formula(1) as an effective ingredient, wherein the cryptotanshinone is isolated from Codonopsis pilosula NANNF.; the liver disease is hepatitis, liver cirrhosis or liver fibrosis; the amount of cryptotanshinone is 0.1-50 wt.% based on the total weight of the composition; and the composition is health food composition capable of being formulated as powder, granule, tablet, capsule or drink.
