The invention concerns a fluid-treatment plant. For better control of the treatment temperature and for achieving more effective heating, the plant comprises a heat exchanger 22 which includes an insulated set of tubes 24, the tubes 28, 32, 38 arranged concentrically, spaced apart and telescopically fitted into each other, whereby the space between the tubes is sealed and filled with an inert gas. The surface of the tubes has been covered with a hydrogen-penetration barrier, normally an aluminium-iron alloy, nickel or copper, which limits the penetration of atomic hydrogen into the space between the tubes, where a combination could arise resulting in the formation of hydrogen gas and a further cause of heat loss. The insulated tube bundle has been telescopically fitted into a tube to form a fluid heat exchanger, while the heat exchanger 22 has been telescopically fitted into circulation piping for liquid waste as part of the formation of the fluid-treatment plant according to this invention. The preferred fluid heat exchanger is a vertically-placed deep-well reactor which is suitable for the wet-oxidation reaction of liquid waste, including municipal effluent sludge. <IMAGE>
