The invention relates to a heat exchanger element having a number of parallel tubes which are stacked one on top of the other. The tubes have a small hydraulic diameter and consist of initially round or rectangular tubes which are compressed with a predetermined height and width to form an essentially rectangular cross-sectional configuration. The compression is somewhat weaker in specific sections along the tubes, the height in these sections being greater than in other parts of the tubes. The sections of greater height form spacing means between the stacked tubes. The tubes are connected at both ends to distributors having connections for the coolant. The tube stack is arranged in an outer housing having connections for the heat transfer medium. The heat transfer medium can thus pass through between the compressed tubes, reference here being to the cooling medium (cooling agent, brine) if the heat exchanger element is part of an evaporator, and to the heating medium if the element is part of a condenser. The flow passages of the heat transfer medium are essentially rectangular and likewise have a small hydraulic diameter.
