Between the pump impeller (6) and the bearing support assembly (17), the pump shaft (1) is surrounded by a shaft seal (10). To permit replacement of the shaft seal in the case of a centrifugal pump of this type, a two-part pump shaft is provided. A shaft part which takes the form of a full shaft (4) can be removed together with the bearing support assembly (17). Exertion of pressure on the sealing element (15) causes the said part to rest against the circumference of the impeller shaft (7) and prevents the escape of liquid from the system. After removal of the lid (11) which is screwed to the casing (8), the shaft seal (10) is accessible and can be replaced. <IMAGE>
