A switching device is proposed for switching a load in a delayed manner, staggered in steps, which switching device contains a component combination which is provided with connections (A, B and C) offering three possibilities and consists of a bimetallic switch, as the normally-open contact, and a ceramic PTC thermistor which heats this switch, the poles of the load, of a voltage source and of a fixed resistor being connected to the three connections (A, B, C) in such a manner that the ceramic PTC thermistor is connected in parallel with the load and the fixed resistor is connected in parallel with the bimetallic switch. <IMAGE>
