CARBONATION PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF SODIUM BICARBONATE

Sodium bicarbonate of controlled crystal size, habit and bulk density is produced by dispersing carbon dioxide into a saturated solution of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate or a slurry of sodium bicarbonate in a saturated solution of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate for reaction therewith. The reaction is carried out generally at a temperature of about 50 DEG to about 120 DEG C in the presence of sufficient Ca<+><+> ion so that a specified amount of Ca<+><+> ion is found in the crystallised sodium bicarbonate. A flow sheet for such process is shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
