A device for a protected continuous DC or AC supply of loads, having a converter unit (which operates as a power converter) and an emergency electrical power supply unit (standby power supply unit) which contains a battery as an energy store, an internal-combustion engine and an electrical machine generator, and of which the converter unit consists of at least one rectifier, to which a regulator is allocated which is connected to an AC mains power supply during normal electrical power operation and is connected to the machine generator during emergency electrical power operation, and contains at least one invertor for continuous AC supply, which invertor is continuously connected to the DC output of the rectifier and to one pole terminal of the battery, which together form an output for DC loads, while in contrast the AC output of the invertor has an output for AC loads. According to the invention, a non-reactive resistor (4), which is dimensioned for supplying the charge maintenance current of the batteries (3) and in parallel with which a power diode (5) is connected which inhibits the charging current, is arranged in a battery current branch. <IMAGE>
