The invention relates to a bench-mounted chain saw for cutting firewood, with special main safety features, the object being to design a compact tool for high performance, operating reliability and accident prevention. This object is achieved according to the invention in that the fixed saw bench (1), at bearing blocks (5), carries the bearing arrangement (2 and 4) for the saw-chain drive shaft (3), the latter being provided with a chain pinion (6) and having a common centre of rotation with a guide-bar holder (8, 9 and 10) which is pivotable and guides the saw guide bar (11) and is provided with a bow (12) spanning the saw guide bar (11) and having an operating handle (15). In the rest position, the saw guide bar (11) is located inside a guide-bar guard (19) on both sides, which is provided at its front side with claws (20), is pivotable like the saw guide bar (11) and is held by a spring (18). When the saw guide bar (11) is moved by means of the operating handle (15) up to the wood (22) to be cut, the electric motor cuts in and likewise cuts out again when the cutting operation is complete, the spring (16) pulling the entire saw unit back into the initial position. <IMAGE>
