The invention relates to a method of producing metallic panel material from which front panels, plates, scales and the like with symbols, lettering and/or markings printed on them can be manufactured. The method is characterised in that a black chromium layer is electrodeposited on a metal panel and a photoresist layer is applied to the black chromium layer. The invention also relates to panel material produced by this method. Preferably, the metal panel is composed of stainless steel. Front panels, plates, scales and the like which are notable for low light reflection, high scratch resistance and good weather resistance can be produced from the panel material.
