A three-speed layshaft range-change gearbox with two shift clutches (K1 and K2) is connected downstream of a main gearbox which can be shifted by a hand lever. The range-change gearbox, in conjunction with the main gearbox, relays a reduction range, a direct range and a splitter range with a total of 12 forward speeds. In the reduction range, only one (K2) of the two clutches of the range-change gearbox is shifted. The position of the other clutch (K1) is arbitrary. As a result, when using a double H-shift with automatic transition between reduction range and direct range, and with a manually operated switch for the splitter unit, downwards shifting from a splitter speed to a speed of the reduction range is possible merely by operating the gear shifting lever. <IMAGE>
