In a video recorder with helical-track recording, a synchronisation track is recorded along one tape edge. The invention provides for recording without this synchronisation track. The speed of the head wheel (1) is regulated from the vertical synchronisation pulses (14) scanned from the helical tracks (28). The necessary distinction between the odd-numbered and the even-numbered fields is obtained either by utilising the structure of the composite synchronisation signal (Figure 2), which differs from field to field, or by utilising the azimuth angle between the direction of the gap of the video head (2, 3) and the transverse direction of the helical tracks (28), which angle differs from helical track to helical track. <IMAGE>
