In the case of an overvoltage suppressor consisting of a series circuit (which is split into a plurality of partial stacks) of spark gaps and voltage-dependent resistors having a very steep characteristic, especially based on ZnO, non-linear control resistors (4) and control capacitors (3) are in each case connected in parallel with the spark-gap partial stacks, and only linear control resistors (5) are connected in parallel with the partial stacks (2) of voltage-dependent resistors. The object of the invention is to specify a voltage controller which is self-linearising, compensates for external interference influences and homogenises the voltage distribution and hence the thermal (initial) stress over a high stack of resistors which is interrupted by spark gaps (partial stack). <IMAGE>
