For connecting two gear shift rods, which are arranged between transmission and gear shift lever of a motor vehicle, a decoupling device is used. After engaging a gear, this device permits a reciprocating movement of the decoupled gear shift rod. As a result, with a gear engaged, the rigid connection between gear shift lever and manual shift transmission is interrupted. A positive connection between the two gear shift rods is made only when selecting the gear or engaging or disengaging the gear. The decoupling device comprises sleeves in which the ends of the two couplable gear shift rods engaging with one another are pivotably mounted so that they are also longitudinally displaceable. The movable sleeves are actively connected to the gear shift rods by pins.
