Mixtures of solid coal-based materials, in particular a finely disperse coal, and catalysts for use in hydrogenation processes, especially in coal hydrogenation, are obtained by converting metal salts from their aqueous solution in the presence of the coal-based material into catalytically active, sparingly soluble derivatives. The metal salts can be dissolved in the aqueous phase of a water-in-oil emulsion. The metal salts used can be salts of Fe, Sn, Mo, Co, Ni, Zn, V, W, Cr and/or Sb; the metals can be precipitated as the hydroxides and/or sulphides.
