A battery-powered road vehicle of the type described in GB 1303071 has its batteries (10) in a series of narrow rectangular casings (30) of moulded plastics material disposed in a fixed stowage frame (8) below a load-carrying platform (2). Finger grips (38) at the tops of the shorter side walls of the casing facilitate the mounting and removal of the individual units provided by said casings. The platform has hinged portions (6) over the stowage frames; these portions carry shielding members (22, 24, 26) which protect the tops of the batteries and which are lifted clear to give access to the batteries when the hinged portions are raised.
