Conventional processes for metallizing nonconductors, particularly plastics, by chemical refining, vapour deposition or sputtering, operate with adhesion-promoting intermediate layers, as for example, lacquers or adhesives. In many cases, a satisfactory bond strength cannot be attained with these contact adhesives. Moreover, the contact adhesives can interfere with the subsequent treatment. Therefore, a process is described in which the surface regions to be coated are roughened by means of an etching method prior to the metallization. Prior to etching these surface regions they are exposed to an energy rich irradiation. Heavy ion beams are satisfactory as energy rich irradiation.
|
