In a textile fabric widthwise stretching roller, an outer, textile contacting, sheath, comprising a single element (13) (Fig. 1, not shown) or a plurality of interconnected elements 32, is rotatably supported on a stationary axle 20 by axially spaced ball or roller bearings 24 tilted or tiltable with respect to the axle axis at inclinations varying along the roller. As shown, rotatably connected, separate, roughened surface, metal sheath elements 32 are each bolted to support members 26 connected to ball bearing outer races 25. The support members 26 are respectively rotatably connected by teeth 27 provided with covers 38 preventing penetration of treatment liquid into the bearings. The end sheath element 32 and the end support member 26 enclosed thereby are connected to a drive receiving gear 29. The bearing inner races are mounted on rings 22 which are rockably mounted on curved surfaces 21 of the axle 22 to simultaneously take up individual inclinations determined by cam portions 35a of a control rod 35 acting on rollered followers 36 connected to the rings 22. A control rod 35 may be made for each fabric being treated; further, separate portions of a single roller may be used for the treatment of several webs. Means measuring the effect on the fabric may adjust for automatic operation. In Fig. 1 (not shown), a single or sectionalized rubber sheath (13) is rotatably supported by ball or roller bearings (10), the inner races of which are mounted on rings (4), (5), (6), (7), (8) having bearing support surfaces with distinct fixed inclinations along the roller. |
