The container is particularly for refuse, and comprises a rectangular vessel with cover. The cover (3) is movable up and down by hydraulic rams (4), while plates hang down (5) from the cover edges and can slide along the vessel walls. Along one lengthwise edge at least the plate is built up of a number of panels (6a-d), two of which at least can slide in relation to each other in the lengthwise direction, typically having wheels at the top running on rails fixed to the cover edge, and which cross over each other.
