When traffic accidents occur, it is often difficult to determine causes afterwards, as the accounts given by witnesses and those involved often differ. As a countermeasure all vehicles are equipped with a continuous monitoring device which makes a video recording of a 360 degree arc around the vehicle by means of a lens system and T.V. recorder. The data are recorded on a continuous loop of tape and the scene played-back on special monitors in police vehicles or stations. The recorder is automatically switched on whenever the vehicle moves or when a metal detector senses another vehicle near. The use of the monitor can be made a legal requirement or could qualify for a reduction in insurance premiums.
