The invention relates to a catalyst, in particular for producing phthalic anhydride by gas phase oxidation of o-xylol and/or naphthaline with an inert carrier and at least one layer having a catalytically active masse containing Ti02 which is applied thereon. The invention is characterised in that at least one part of the used Ti0 2 comprises the following characteristics: (a) the BET-surface is more than 15 m^2/g, (b) the primary crystal size is more than 210 angstrom.
