A rotating drum 1 for cooling and separating castings and moulding sand has a perforated sheet lining 27, 8. In a first part 28 of the drum there are sand-lifting blades 17 between the said lining 27 and the sealed drum wall 28 to lift sand that flows through the holes or the perforations in the said lining 28, so that the sand flows down over the castings. In the second part 8 of the lining closer to the discharge end the said lining part 8 intersects the theoretical sand level 13, 14 and the castings are lifted out of the sand so that they are discharged by way of the lining part 9 and the discharge edge 10 separated from the sand. Sand that is separated from the castings is collected in a closed end part 5, 7 in the drum 1 with a special discharge edge 11 for discharging the sand in a small zone at the discharge end. This gives a drum with a larger cooling and separation capacity and efficiency and generating less noise and dust than known drum designs of equivalent type. <IMAGE>
