Rolling of wedge-shaped profiles - using two conical rolls with flat, concave, or convex working surfaces, so various profiles including turbine blades can be made

A billet with a rectangular cross-section is rolled using at least one pass between two rolls rotating in opposite directions. The redn. in thickness of the billet across its width achieved by rolling is inversely proportional to the linear speed of the two work rolls at every point across the width. The wedge-shaped workpieces can be obtd. using a pair of conical work rolls which may have straight or barrelled working surfaces. Alternatively, one or both rolls may possess profiled grooves so that a variety of cross-sections tapering towards one edge can be obtd. Profiles tapering towards both edges, e.g. turbine blades, can also be made. Mfg. wedge-shaped profiles of ferrous or non-ferrous metals for use as components in all types of machines.
