The invention relates to a compact rotary switch, possibly for a plurality of switching stages, in the case of whose operation a permanent-magnet core (5) experiences a relative translational movement with respect to a contact arrangement having switching elements (8), and at the same time acts on their contacts. In the case of a rotational movement, which is translated from the rotating shaft (1) to a magnet carrier (2), a guide element (4) is guided along a control-cam track of a control element (3), which results in displacement of the magnet carrier (2) in one direction. In consequence, the contacts pass into the region where the magnetic core (5) is effective and are at the same time operated. A spring, or even a second control element (7) and a second guide element (6) can, for example, be used as the restoring element. In this case, as a rule, the same components can be used as for the first control element (3) and for the first guide element (4). <IMAGE>
