The leakage detector uses an amplitude or frequency modulated signal which is carried in the pipe until the leaking region is reached. At that point, the signal escapes the confines of the pipe and can be detected by a ground level detector and demodulator circuit. The signal is applied between an access point in the pipe line and earth by a modulator with at least 30 milliwatt output power. The detector is a wheeled device coupled to an input amplifier havingone side earthed. When the wheel is close to the region of the leak a signal is detected and is amplified to drive a panel meter. The wheel is then positioned for maximum signal strength to locate the leak.
