A reed comprises first (7) and second (13) dents which each comprise two limbs (8, 9; 14, 15) and a connecting portion connecting these limbs and which in the connecting portion are each provided with a recess (12, 16) for forming a half- open guide channel for the weft thread, this channel extending over the maximum weaving width. The recesses (12, 16) are in weftwise alignment with one another, and the limbs (8, 9; 14, 15) of the first and second dents (7, 13) are offset relatively to one another warpwise. As a result the warp threads (5, 6) are guided in a closely spaced pitch when the weft is beaten-up and in a more broadly spaced pitch when the weaving shed is formed and are thus dealt with considerably carefully. Lumps in the warp threads (5, 6) also have less troublesome effects. Other embodiments with three sets of dents and an embodiment where the dents (7) have no recesses are described.

|
