A device and a method for controlling lamps of a refrigerator are provided to turn off a lamp automatically according to a preset maximum lighting time period of the lamp and cavity temperature of the refrigerator. A device for controlling lamps of a refrigerator includes a door sensing part(10) for sensing the opening/closing of a door, and a central processing unit(50) for determining a preset maximum lighting time period of a lamp(30) elapsed or not if the door opening is sensed by the door sensing part to turn off the lamp if so. A temperature sensing part(40) is further mounted in the refrigerator for sensing cavity temperature, so that the central processing unit turns off the lamp if the sensed temperature is increased more than a predetermined degree before the maximum lighting time period elapsed.
